PORTS ACCESS TRAFFIC MENACE: Maritime Truckers’ Coalition Rubs Mind With Port Managers, Police.
By Izuchukwu Ozoemena
As part of efforts to solve the perennial traffic menace on ports access roads,
the leadership of the National Road Transport Owners (NARTO), National Association of Maritime Truck Operators (NAMTOP) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have jointly paid a courtesy visit to the Tincan Island Port Manager, Mr Sylvester Egede, his Apapa Port counterpart, Charles Okaga, and the Apapa Port Police Command Commissioner, Lanre Ishola.
John Kennedy Ikemefuna, MWUN’s image maker stated this in a release. The high-powered delegation led by the MWUN President General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju centered its discussion on the welfare of trucks drivers.
Welcoming the visitors, the Tincan Island Port Manager who expressed gratitude over the visit of Prince Adeyanju said that since he (Sylvester) assumed office, it was the first time the number one maritime labour leader would pay him a visit, although on the ground of a collaboration.
The unions told the Ports Managers how they have been collaborating in the area of ticketing for truckers within the ports premises in line with the exclusive rights vested in the Unions by their individual statutes.
“Ticketing for truckers is within the ports zones only and not for any external body outside the ports,” the release explained.
“The ports being regulated by the federal government of Nigeria cannot be under the state or local governments authority.
On his part, the Apapa Port Manager, Charles Okaga, raised certain issues he said that have been impeding port operations especially as concerns truckers.
He observed that presently, there are evidences that the ports access roads are becoming free from traffic congestions. However, he regretted that the e-call up systems is still not perfect, but said it must be rejigged for efficient and effective port operations. It is also important, he stated, for truckers to be sincere and disciplined in the course of their operations to ensure sanity in port operations.
The Commissioner of Police, Port Command, CP Lanre Ishola was also briefed about the challenges truck drivers encounter in the hands of security agencies particularly outside the ports zones, where outrageous extortions from truck drivers occur at an alarming rate.
The collaboration appealed to the Police chief to use his good offices to check this anomaly confronting the truckers.
In response, the police boss, said that anything beyond 200mtrs distance from the port area is not under his jurisdiction. If such incidents happen within the port, however, the matter should be reported to him directly.
He promised to look into the allegations holistically and when and where found to be true, would assist by taking the matter to the Lagos State Police Command.
The CP also promised the coalition full collaboration provided it is within the confines of the law.
On behalf of the collaborating BoT members on the entourage, Prince Adeyanju thanked the Commissioner of Police for the warm reception accorded them. He hailed the Commissioner’s genuine willingness to work and cooperate with the coalition to ensure seamless operational trucking service within the ports premises.

CVFF Acruals Safe and Intact, Says NIMASA DG, Mobereola.
By Izuchukwu Ozoemena
Contrary to the impression being bandied in certain quarters regarding the safety of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Funds (CVFF), the acruals remain intact and secure in the vaults of the Central Bank of Nigeria and her Single Treasury Account (TSA) arrangement.
Dr Dayo Mobereola, the Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) gave the update, November 19 in a release by the agency.
According to the Director-General, the update has become necessary to refute misleading publications alleging that the funds have disappeared from the CVFF account.
“The report of missing money is both misleading and false”, the agency’s Assistant Director of Public Relations, Edward Osagie explained in a press statement.
“For the record, the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund, securely held in the NIMASA account at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), remains intact. There has been no disappearance of funds, and no illegal transactions, as the article suggests.
“This misinformation is a figment of the author’s imagination aimed at undermining NIMASA’s integrity, and mislead the public about the Agency’s operations.
“The Management of NIMASA will ensure that the CVFF is utilised in line with its statutory purpose”, the
NIMASA Director General stated.
Mobereola was emphatic about the state of the funds and assured stakeholders of the safety under the CVFF.
“Let us be clear that the CVFF account at the Central Bank of Nigeria is safe, intact, and secure. We at NIMASA will continue to manage it with the utmost responsibility, and there are no irregularities or illegal activities surrounding the funds”
He urged the public to disregard any false narratives and to continue trusting the Agency’s ability to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The CVFF is a fund established under section 42 of the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act 2003 to promote the development of indigenous ship acquisition capacity and to provide credit facilities to local maritime operators.
NIMASA, the release assured, is committed to transparency, accountability, and the advancement of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
